Poster style

Today we had a preparation talk for T. Tepper-Garcia's thesis presentation. Good presentation, nice viewgraphs (made in LaTeX, gotta get this style), but he'll have a lot of work to make it fit in the 30 minutes he has for his defence.

Part of the day was used on searching for a new flat and most of it used to prepare a poster style for our group, we'll need it for the Heidelberg conference. I know it's not science, but someone has to do it.

2 years of blog

2 years of blog! Today's post is not the best one for a "aniversary" but, it's real life :-)

Mostly solving this "personal issue", which is looking for a new flat and that takes a huge amount of time, and solving the observation problem I comment yesterday ... other issues including what to observe!

But 2 years of blog and it's being quite an experience to make a revision and summary of all the work in a day a put it here. Very helpful because after a whole day sometimes I found a link between different things when I was thinking on how to write it here. Thanks again, David, for the suggestion on doing it!

Late post again ... yes, again ...

Late from yesterday after a couple of days without posting. Friday I was back from Bonn but the time was used to try to put forward a couple of personal issues, which also took monday and part of tuesday and will take some time the next few day (hopefully it ends soon).

The day was partially used to choose a target to the one single night we got at the INT (despite having asked for 8 nights). The complication is that the dates were chosen because we could observe 2 "half groups" each night. Explaining: in the first half of the night we'd observe "group 1" setting in one filter, and the second half of the night we'd observed "group 2" rising. The next night the same procedure in a second filter. Then the following nights we'd observed groups 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8. With one single night, we have to find an object that can be observed the whole night. But none of the objects of interest are fully in the sky this time of the year ... a couple of "less damage" candidates appeared, now we're discussing that.

At night I read the thesis of my friend Thorsten Tepper-Garcia, who will present July, 11th. The thesis is very good, I liked it. Haven't got to the mathematical details, but there should be no problem with it. The work was on MC simulations of HI clouds and it's influence on the observed magnitudes, cosmic flux decrement and photometry redshifts.

Also worth commenting the two papers of Krick et al about intracluster diffuse light in 10 clusters at two redshift regions (0.05-0.1 and 0.15-0.3). A very nice work, exausting, where most of the problems on this kind of analysis was taken care carefully. The colors are compatible with old stellar population. Correlations between ICL flux and M3-M1, density and total galaxy flux were found, but no correlation between ICL flux and redshift maybe due to selection
effects. The correlation between M3-M1 shows us that clusters with cD galaxies have less ICL than clusters with no cD. It seems logical for me since ICL and cD halo are hard to be differenciated, if there's any difference, if the cD is not just the "laying" in the potencial, as the ICL. The ICL fraction has an anticorrelation with mass, with large error bars, oposed to the results of simulations and a week anticorrelation with redshift, an expected correlation. No correlation between color gradients and other cluster properties and the ICL profiles are fitted by a de Vaucouleurs or an exponential profiles and most of them can also be fitted by a Hubble-Reynolds profile ("a substitute for the complicated surface brightness profile of an NFW density profile").

Going home!

So! Meetings are over here in Bonn!

In the morning Elif and Reynier Peletier about our work in kinematics of galaxies. That was short because Reynier had to come back to Groningen by lunch time. The final stages of the paper were planned.

In the afternoon a bit more of Elif's work, a lot of work, and discuss where it goes now.

Now going back home, by car, with Bodo ...

Late again from Bonn

Yes, late again ... no comments :-))

Yesterday, was a nice day. Good discussion with Holger Israel, one of Peter Schneider's students on weak lensing about their pipeline for mass maps ... great, the system is very "pipeline" and you can use without too much "ado" on learning how it goes!! In one hour we had (including explanations) a mass map for a clusters, and doing all the necessary tests!!! Now I wanna try it myself!

In the afternoon a bit of walking around Bonn and a short meeting with Helen Eckmiller, a student of Thomas Reiprich on X-Ray properties of groups, nice XMM data also including 2 Hickson Compact Groups (my babies). Nice idea of her work and it my have some overlap with my projects, so that it can also become a colaboration!

At the end dinner in an Irish Pub and beers with Bodo and Franz, a local friend!

Today a meeting with Reynier Peletier and Elif Kutdemir (one of Bodo's students about the paths we should take our project). More on that at the end of the day!

Late from yesterday at Bonn

So, yesterday, first half of the day on the train to get to Bonn. ICE rox (that's for Hogg and Miguel :-) ).

Got on time for my talk at the AIfA about IGL and it was nice. Very interesting questions. After the talk a bit of chatting with people around and some updating on what should be done in other projects. Then dinner with the institute people and hotel! :-)

Today some meetings planned!

Back and going!!

So! The last two days of last week were used to arrange the logs about what was reduced lately and to arrange details of our vacation trip to Spain (from friday night - 08 - till sunday night - 17).

Vacations were great! I'll write something about it later!!

Now back to Goettingen for one day, solve some problems, finish the talk I'll give tomorrow in Bonn at the AIfA. I'll be there until thursday when we have a meeting with the Dutch colaborators.

More tomorrow!

Report ready

The report is ready, maybe some very small change tomorrow, but it's ready ...

Tomorrow back to real work!

Report

Instead of more data reduction, report writing ... urgent things first!!

Still one

One more down, one more to go ...

New clusters

Lesson learned, started by the WCS, which needed to be corrected. The lack of faint objects in the USNO catalogue made it more complicated, but done! Now some adjustments and photometry ...

Then new cluster that starts with WCS correction heheheheh ... the weekend will be long. But good :-))
