Trying to go on :-)

Monday I had to leave quickly to visit a flat in Garching, which turned out to be exactly the kind of thing I don't wanna live in, but there was no internet connection at home, so no post.

Monday I finished translating and understanding the code Paul Hickson used on the dynamics paper. I'll need to update some of the values there to new values of H_0 and to the concordance cosmology.

Still have to see what I'll really need, but it was nice to understand it.

Tuesday some computer issues to integrate my laptop to the ESO internal network and in the afternoon I brought back to Goettingen Fernanda and Matheus.

Today solved some issues on the brazilian birth certificate of Matheus, sent the material to the embassy in Berlin. Also stop by the institute where I talked to my colleague Mathias Zetzl that wanted to clarify some doubts about Blanton & Roweis KCORRECT. Unfortunately I used the IDL version that has more options than the C version (that he's using) and so he has to do some "walk arounds" to get the results. The discussion was good and we may have found the way to solve his problems.

The funny side is that he found the information that I used this code googling "kcorrect" and this blog shows up in the first page!! :-)) That probably means I used too many days to get where I wanted hehehehe

Done with masses

Done with masses, still missing the M/L estimate, that's for weekend or monday. I'll explain it all on monday, now I'm busy with Matheus :-)

One Month!

Today Matheus has his "one month birthday" :-))

It still seems like yesterday!

Today the day was in codes! Trying to figure out how Paul Hickson's code calculates the values of the 1992 paper (it has some missing libraries so it doesn't run, and is for "old cosmology). Also figuring out how Bender's COSMO works to use it with my code. It calculates distances and scales to a given cosmology.

The first part was worked out, on separations, de-projected velocity dispersions and crossing times. Now a bit more work to have the mass estimates working.

It goes on tomorrow.

Still on the velocity field paper!

Yep! Some administrative issues, lunch in town with the family and Bodo.

Finished writing all my comments on the velocity field paper, they were many! Some coding on the IGL paper and now at home with the family playing with Matheus!

Today my friend Miguel Verdugo handed in his thesis. Congratulations! If I'm not mistaken, presentation will be March 25th!

Paper correction

So! Forgot to mention, but Friday my friend Bruno Sanchez presented his PhD thesis. The new doctor from the Goettingen university/MPS.

Today the day was, spent within the visit of the janitor to see the flat's oven is dead and need replacement, internet connection for the flat and corrections on the Velocity Field paper. Now I have to put them in an e-mail ...

Back at ESO

Yes! Life is gonna be like this, back here, back there ...

Last week was hard, because Matheus needed a lot of attention with the cramps and that allowed me little time to work. Some understanding on things I need to use to improve the paper I'm finishing and some reading + comments of the Velocity Fields paper. None of the tasks are ready but the go on.

Yesterday we came, the three of us, to Munich and are going to spend the whole week and eventually a second week around here.

Today the arrangements to make the flat a home and a large Faculty meeting took most of the day, with some contacts to have the oven fixed in the apartment, internet connection and some stuff for my new visa.

Also some science, working on the paper. Later, at home, I intent to keep on the reading!

Back in Goettingen

Yesterday, after some informal meetings and a lunch talk I came back to Goettingen, because Matheus was having very strong cramps and Fernanda needed help with him. I'm gonna spend the week here and then, next week, we'll all go to Garching and spend the week there.

The informal discussions may lead to some good things, things we've been trying to do for some years and now, in the same floor we can manage!

Also working on the last details of the paper on intragroup light. Got the original code from Paul Hickson for the 1992 paper on the dynamics of the groups to be able calculate parameters exactly the way he does.

Started checking our paper on velocity fields, that is in the last stages before submission, but taking Matheus to the doctor and trying to calm him took a big chunk of my day :-)

ESO

First day at ESO (late post, because I had to leave quickly to get the supermarket open).

I started yesterday (officially at Feb. 1st) one year as ESO Fellow, in this project with Bodo Ziegler (that now is ESO Staff).

First day was nice, nice people, lots of people. Mostly spent on coming from Goettingen, getting office, computer account, appartment keys, handing forms and so on.

Also some research on the diffuse light paper.

The only science last week as reading Miguel Verdugo's thesis, while holding Matheus ... I'll have to come back to Goettingen today because Matheus is having cramps, what is pretty normal between 3 and 12 weeks, but he's crying every hour, so I can't leave Fernanda alone! I'll probably be back next week.

Yes, we'll be living in Goettingen, since Fernanda has her position at the Max Planck for Experimental Medicine, best place in the world for her research!

Back!

So!!! Due to my long absence you can figure out what has happened! YES Matheus is here!! He was born the 21st of January, but since then he stayed at the hospital in observation and got home today, after 15 days! Now everything is in order!!!

Now that we don't spend the days in the hospital some science can be part of our lives again!

Today I finished the preparation of a backup observation ... in case the sky is not as good as my friend Andrew needs, then he observes my babies ... I hope he can get his data, of course!!!

Now life will come back to it's normal course, not the same as before, but still normal!
