So, back to work!
Today trying to identify a couple of possible problems with the magnitudes measured with the FORS data ... but, up to now, it seems that there's no problem, only a filter difference.
Also trying to reproduce the last results from the group member to 3 common galaxies in my sample.
German exam
The weekend, yesteday and today studying to the German exam I had today. It was good (I hope).
Today also sent an abstract to a conference.
(Forgot to mention on friday! We had snow!! Not much, but a bit ... but on saturday and sunday we had rain, so there's no snow left ...)
More on catalogues
Yesterday sick at home ... only left for the german class ...
New catalogues were matched, cleaned and got the final magnitudes with the right coordinates to our objects.
Some magnitude difference has to be checked between the new photometry and the old one.
Sick at home ...
Yep! A strong cold (as is usual to someone without any C vitamine source due to allergies :-) ).
Stayed home, but worked a bit.
Tried a feature on SExtractor that was suppose to help matching the catalogues .. at the end I found that my "hard" way of doing it was more efficiente ... or the cold affected my brain and I was not able to see things clear (always a possibility).
Now catalogues are being matched, the ones with the write WCS coordinates.
Tomorrow let's see if I'll stay healing a bit more or face the -8 degrees and go to the institute.
WCS fixed
So!
Fixing the WCS took a little more then I expected, but it was done. There's still a little trick to do, so I had to use a bit of "force" but it's done. Now rebuild the SExtractor catalogues and it's ready for the rest of the analysis.
STRONG COLD!!! Probably gonna work from home on wednesday ...
Keeps going
A new week! A new way of seeing things ... most of the people re-think their lifes around their birthdays or aroud the new year ... those options have almost no diference for me, since I was born in the 6th of January ... so I'm done with my birthday/new year life re-thinking. Lots of thing will change, specially the actitude about some things ... I tired of some of them and "I don't want them anymore" ... so a new week for a new way of, more than seeing, facing things!
The day would be used on finish organizing the tables and the note and keep the next steps of the work ... but, there's always problems.
During the FORS reduction, on finding our objects there, I realized the WCS was wrong ... ok, because I needed only to find around 30 objects, not a big problem, much faster than fixing the WCS. BUUUUUT (there's always a but) I found out I'll need the RA and DEC for EACH object in the field for a following project using those data ... so I'm fixing the WCS ...
To finish the day, a movie, "The Persuit of Happyness" (with Y, see the movie to understand) with Will Smith! They had it today in original version (in English, not in German). The movie is very beautiful! Something I learned in those years in Germany. Do the things ANYWAY. Since no one was up to go to the movie ... I went by myself. Gotta confess it's funnier with other people ... but ... :-))

Crazy week ...
So! A summary of the whole week (thought about splitting in days ... but ... no)
At Bad Honnef, the trip there was good, despite starting obscenely early :-)
Got there in time, we had two poster section at the afternoon, a night discussion on the future of the project and so on. Nice that Dimitri was there also, not only good for talking, but also good because we managed to make BUDDA work together! That was very useful! Finally it seemed to work!
Some Kölsch with friends and we were ready for the last poster section (the one I was suppose to be at my poster, even though everyone was at their posters all the time).
Morning section on friday and I headed to Cologne for more Kölsch and searching a good bass amplifier. Found it and took it to Goe! :-)
So, weekend my second birthday party with Akhilesh at EinsB. A nice party, everybody had fun! And also some anticipation because of the result of the Bad Honnef SPP meeting that would be released on monday.
Monday arrived and the result too! We got my position for 1 more year! So, 1 year of DLR postion and 1 year of DFG position leaves me here until Jan 2009 ... sounds good, 2 years in a row without asking for money in between.
Monday, after a small celebration we found out that the DLR semestral report due to Jan 31st, was actually due to Jan 15th ... (that exact day). We managed to get it due to the next day. Hard work on that for the next day also and report sent on time.
Wednesday I had to solve some problems in town, but the work as basically find the IDs and coordinates of the objects and find them in the FORS MS 0451 images.
Thursday was finishing the matching of the catalogs and producing the tables with the photometry.
Today was finishing that and in the afternoon I stopped to organize all I already have in a systematic fashion, otherwise I'll get crazy.
Also tests with Budda have been made in the weekend and in this week. It works!
Now, more on monday.
One more day, now travelling
Today printing the poster for tomorrow ... group meeting with almost no discussion since we were all in vacations ... and multiband photometry of the cluster we're "attacking" now.
Now running a catalogue match (that will be running for a while), than is find the galaxies we have spectroscopy to make a separate table of the "objects of interest" and then applying "kcorrect" to get restframe magnitudes.
Small routine developed, all the other clusters should run fine in automatic mode.
Tomorrow at 8 a train to Bad Honnef, what makes me wake up "obscenely early" (as a good friend once told me), at least for my standards hehehehehe
The may problem is not being awake, but awake and ready for the pressure of the meeting ... hehehehehe
So! Back on monday (or sunday) with a summary of the meeting!

Today data reduction! Comparing photometry, checking if the nights were photometric, checking weather conditions, zero points ...
Boring, but necessary! It keeps going tomorrow ... 3 bands, a lot of images :-)
Also got back to the German course! It was nice, as always, even though I was quite lost, since I missed the last 3 classes because of the trip to Spain ... I'll catch up
Back from vacations!
First official day of work of the year!
Official because I've been working since I've got from Spain.
Goal, reducing FORS/VLT data of one of our clusters to have multi-band photometry! Problem? Reducing a raw data run, from almost scratch! Fortunately the bias and flat was already ready (even though if it was for a IGL analysis the flat quality is lousy, but since is photometry of small galaxies, it's not a problem).
But, the day was actually spent on paper work and preparation to the DFG workshop of thursday and friday. This workshop decides who gets money from the DFG/SPP program. They take us for two half days to "defend" our project with a poster and talking to the referees if they want to know something. Good points of that, you can solve problems in real time and at friday evening they will have already defined who gets and who doesn't get money ... bad point ... A LOT OF PRESSURE!! Anyway!
So, thursday I'm going there!

Trip, second and last part!
End of the trip (29/12/06 to 03/12/07)
So, I managed to post the first part of the trip that friday in Lisbon :-)
Got the train, it was not SO BAD, but bad enough. Got to Madrid, got the car at the parking (fortunately it was the train station parking, not the airport one, otherwise the ETA bombing would have "taken care" of it) and went downtown Madrid to check some stuff I was needing, before going to Carlos' place.
On the way downtown the police stopped me to check documents and alcoholic levels (at 9AM, what kind of alcoholic do they think I am????), after all it was a nice chat with the officers about passport, what means what in my driver's license and about soccer (of course, I'm Brazilian, I'm by definition a soccer fan and a great player hehehehehe).
After walking a while, got to Carlos' and in the afternoon we went to a body treatment place, full of pools, where Olga used to work ... that was really relaxing.
On sunday, NY eve, we went to the hills for some hiking (poorly prepared, since I haven't take my boots) and after that to Diego's to prepare for the New Year, some dinner and drinking ... a lot of drinking. After staying at Diego's for a while we went to a disco, with terrible electronic music, after to another, with the same terrible music (Diego says it was totally different ... hehehehe) at 7:30 Carlos was already in bed at Diego's, me and Olga having some hot chocolate at the corner cafe and Miguel and Diego back to the first disco, till 10 AM hehehehehe they're nuts!!!
Waking up was NOT EASY AT ALL!! A hypoglycemia attack and you can't get out of bed for some hours hehehehe After that driving back to Carlos' and sleeping MORE!
Last day to do something (2th). A visit to Decathlon to by some sport equipment (here in Goe there's no big shop for that) and then to Toledo, to see the nice town Carlos is moving in to his Ph.D.! Wonderful place!!
Back home, packing! All the thousand things we both on the way!! It was a looooong packing to make everything fit (also in the next morning there was some "repacking").
Got the plane back, last time we saw the sun until now ... blah, no comments! Carlos and Olga went with us to the airport, giving the car back had no problems and boarding also!
Getting to Goettingen, only time for a quick shower and getting to Thanners (our favorite bar), since it was wednesday and is the day the Brazilian community gathers there!
The next days was about some work to finish important things, the very nice birthday party I had on saturday with lot's of nice friends that ended around 7 AM in a nice disco here in Goe (the Tangente) which I've never been before!! There was also a sleepy sunday hehehehehe
Vacations were great! Got ten times more tired than before, in the body, and 10 times more relaxed than before, in the mind! As it should be!!
