Several things

Yesterday the day ended in the Biergarten in Garching with Bodo and Thomas Kronberger (and his girlfriend). Thomas will present his thesis on monday, in Innsbruck and will leave astronomy for a job as analyst. That worries me about the future of astronomy hehehehe

Of course the morning was not so easy (not bad also) and today I'll head back to Goettingen to help Fernanda, who's recovering from a cold ...

Arranged with MNRAS how to make a small update on the paper, missing reference, and already submitted it to astro-ph.

Retrieved ACS processed images for two fields, to complete the cluster analysis and arranged the data backup (before anything happens).

Now I'm browsing about Astro-Wise and Theli, to see where to reduce some multi-CCD data in a fast way.

Elif sent us the paper back, so that will be part of the journey home along with cosmic-ray rejection.

At the station I managed to get a bike reservation for the 16.06!!! IEEEE and the other post issue got solved also.

Clusters

Day started with a bike ride, a bit more "found" than the day before, and stronger rhythm.

At work got a comment on the paper that appeared in astro-ph. Now waiting for the editor to allow me or not a small modification.

Multicomponent modeling ran ok.

Retrieving some images from HST archive ...

Installing Theli to try data reduction on it.

Small bureaucratic stuff and a city bike problem (flat tire).

Solving things

WCS correction done for the cluster in question and modeling running. Should be ready anytime (the machine is quite fast). Some discussion also about the next step of this project, that will require some ACS raw data reduction.

Taking care of some "postal" issues.

I'm expecting a parcel with some stuff my father bought here in Germany. It was suppose to be here last week, so that he'd take it himself to Brazil. It didn't arrive on time. Either because the sender only sent it on monday (he denies) or because GLS delayed it due to a religious holiday in the south of the country. Fernanda stayed the whole day waiting for it and no one rang at home. At the end of the day there was a notice on the post box that they came and there was no one at home ... they didn't even bother to RING ... they will come on wednesday again, let's see if they will at least ring.

I'm trying to bring my city bike to Garching, from Goettingen. Not able to. By train I would need a reservation for a bike place, and it seems to be sold out until the end of the summer. The option is ship it here (by ship I mean send it here, not that it will come by "river" hehehehe). The post would do that in a easy and expensive way. The D-Bahn would do that on a bit more complicated by cheaper way. The D-Bahn option involves calling a 0900 phone number that seems to be banned at any normal phone (even my home phone can't call it). The post option was simple and then when I wanted to order it got VERY complicated ... so. I'll probably disassemble the bike and bring it in a sport-bike bag. As I did for one of my race bikes this week.

Speaking of which, I managed to start finding ways to train in Garching. 25 km to the next village trying to find a good pavement and not so crowded way. It was OK to be back on track.

Back in Garching

After a couple of weeks working at home due to Fernanda's back problem, back in Garching.

Tried to bring my city bike, that I finished rebuilding the last week, but D-Bahn had no places for bike for the next weeks (yes, it's all sold out for weeks) so I brought my race bike (the older one - the new one is at home in Goettingen, where there's something to climb). Since the weather is good, this week will be good for riding.

Now I'm checking a way of bringing the city bike by post or so. Not the best/more economic option, but should do the trick.

Friday night I received the acknowledgement that the paper was accepted, finally. It will show up in astro-ph on wednesday and I have to send the copyright papers now.

Re-correcting the WCS for one of the clusters, the first I did the photometry and the last to do the ACS analysis. It has still an offset. Since there was no pugs this time on the train, part of the time as spent on reading (also science). Also the paper-wine celebration with Bodo and some colleagues from ESO.

Modeling ...

So! Thursday and friday modeling objects. Finally, thanks to Marco Barden, the problem that was collapsing GALAPAGOS was solved and the last clusters of this project was fully modeled. Now multicomponent models, selection and analysis. This will continue next week.

This friday was the traditional "Gänseliesel" kiss of the new Ph.D.'s where Miguel Verdugo, Bruno Sanchez and Julian Blanco officially finished their work as Ph.D. students and are "among us". Congratulations!

Almost 1000

Post 501, almost 1000 :-)))

Since the end of last week between finding a baby sitter for Matheus, my parents visiting and lots of work checking GALFIT results of several objects.

Still checking. Got to the next cluster, now things are more or less on a pipeline. Today a nice lunch conversation with Bodo and Miguel in Goettingen. Important input for this work.

Seems that we've found baby sitter!

Post 500

Post 500!!! That brings lots of issues, good for the complicated last two weeks.

500 would mean 100 weeks, almost 2 year, but indeed it's almost 3 years of blogging! OK, there are vacation times, holidays, conferences, days you just can't do anything for one or other reason.

The last 3 years were complicated new country, new situations, divorce, new relationship, a child, and that of course reflects in your productivity, specially working with science. I thought, all that time, that my professional side was somehow little affected (impossible to be unaffected), but now, in a new situation emotional and professional, I really see how bad this last period was. Now I can see that I couldn't concentrate, that I couldn't really produce things properly.

Even now, coping with Matheus at home and trying to share his care working 600 km from home I can do more than before. Now is recovering the time I spent healing.

About the complicated week. Had to stay home because since the end of last week Fernanda has a sacroiliac joint inflammation, still a remain from childbirth, according to the doctor. This way he can't lift, carry or bath Matheus ... so ... Together with that we're trying to solve the baby care problem for next month up, as I comment last post. We got some names and numbers, things are on their way, but they're gonna cost MUCH more than we expected, a maybe more than we can afford ... still in process. As Miguel well expressed in his comment to the last post, yes I'm pissed off.

All those functions are taking a lot of time, and also I've being trying to finish the analysis of one object (the prototype for my pipeline), and with all these problems that's being taking more time than I wanted and more time than I have. It will be ready tomorrow.

Talking about being pissed off. I hate being ROBED!! As foreseen, my former landlord STOLE MY MONEY, from my caution and used it to renew his dammed flat!! Yes he wanted things the way he thought they were, or wanted it to be, but he's never been in the flat before I entered. Now he painted the bathroom and the DOORS, and put new lamps and charged me for that. First, I gave the flat back in the same (or maybe better) conditions I've got it. Bathroom color, doors color, NO LAMPS. Second, he charged me for painting the bathroom and the doors, more hours than a professional painter (and a good and careful one) wanted to paint THE WHOLE flat. The main point is, with a THIEF like this man, you need a lawyer to deal with it. Then comes the problems. 1) It may be more expensive the amount he STOLE from me; 2) You have a lot of stress with this, specially when you only have a colloquial use of the language; 3) the country law is know for favoring the landlord! Lets see.

Basically that! So post 500, in a new era!

Tomorrow there will be no posting, this object will be ready, but my parents are arriving for the month and tomorrow there will be a lot of talking and catching up.
