Back in Germany!

So! Trip to Italy was great!!!

Florence and Venice, a bit of Bologna and Treviso. Nice weather, a lot of history and the arrival of stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia 2009 in Florence, amazing!!

Italy is the closest to a chaos you can get, I love the country, but it's really messy!! Drivers, on the street or on the road are terrible, seems that street directions or any other kind of street sign are just "indications", they are not really taken seriously ... and problems get transfered to you very "easily". For example, going in the motorway in Bologna the automatic station where you should get your ticket was down, getting to Florence I had no ticket, so I received a "fine", which I had to go to a service point from the motorway company to explain what has happened and pay what I was suppose to pay ... that meant wasting time and stressing searching for this place and there you're treated like an idiot who didn't get the ticket at the damned broken station ... at the end they are "so kind" to let you pay ONLY what you're suppose to ...

Just an example of the many stressful situations we've been. Of course the other part just makes you forget about it all (I'm writing this here ASAP before I forget it all hehehehehe).

Back to science: morphological classification. This will be going almost the whole week.

Fishing part I done

So I finished the "fishing for CAS". Now the data is sent to our CAS expert.

I'll be fishing 2D models now, when I'm back from Italy.

More fishing

Still fishing objects on out CAS analysis. That should end tomorrow.

There was also some solving problems in the city, like updating my "I don't need glasses anymore" status on my driver's license, picking up tickets for tomorrow's trip and fixing my Mountain Bike's back wheel.

A bit of morphology, a bit of spectroscopy ...

Wednesday was a "lost" day on terms of science. I had to spend the whole day downtown solving problems. Dentist, bank, buying tickets to Italy, ... all solved (I hope).

Today I worked on the morphology project. I "fished" some objects and now I need to select them and send them to Asmus Boehm (Innsbruck) so that he can do he part of the project on them too.

Also Miguel Verdugo stopped by to give me some hints on the FORS pipeline, we actually spent more time fixing problems than actually working on the data, but it was useful. There's still problem with GASGANO, but that will have to wait a bit.

Still dammed linux!!

So another day lost on installing and making things working properly. Interference between scisoft libraries and IDL libraries, IDL not setting paths correctly, IDL with bugs, fors data reduction pipeline with missing parts ... 

Now everything seems to be working and I can come back to work.

Dammed linux!!!

The WHOLE DAY installing things, Specially scisoft, that when you load the Setup.csh, it conflicts with gnome and you can't enter it anymore. If you don't load it, you don't have scisoft ...

Tried to install what I needed, like skycat separately and I couldn't!! It doesn't install on Fedora 10!!! When I was about to give up, a friend gave an idea and we found a way to do it. Checking if COLORTERM is gnome-terminal, then loading the csh file ... tomorrow I'll try a bit more if it worked.

Also managed to solve the problem of the mouse getting crazy when I come back to linux with the KVM.

I wonder why none of those problems happens on MacOSX ...

Done with figures

Done with figures. Monday back to my normal line. It was good, found somethings that can be improved.

The sad note is for linux, again. My gnome stopped working a while ago. I didn't care much 'cos I had more urgent things to do. Today decided to try to save it ... well ... couldn't find a way :-/ That means ... reinstalling the whole thing. Tried twice and the installation freezes ... looks like also some hardware problem. Third time, doing it without package selection not to waste my time again, it has worked. So ... now package selection (now means, not now, some other day!). In 18 days Fedora 11 will be released, but I need it working this week ... oh well!

Speeding up ...

Hunting missing objects in the different parts of the high-z analysis. Trying to get a couple of figures done for a talk on that ...

Good news, my talk at the diffuse light JD in the IAU-GA in Rio was accepted. Now gotta buy a ticket and work on the registration ...
