Filters ...

Still with filters!

Not quite convinced about the test I'm doing using Gunn filters to check results with CNOC ... still searching for the proper transmission curve, but the CFHT website is a bit messy or missing info about it!

The AB x VEGA systems test was ok, but the difference is on cenths of magnitude.

Filters

Defining filter transmissions. Johnson-Cousins and Gunn systems to do things "properly" using kcorrect.

Also, at the end of the day we got a "bad" conclusion about VEGA and AB systems ... more tests tomorrow!

Last from friday and for today!

So, friday, saturday and today playing with filters.

Thinking about on how a calibration made with Landolt stars affect the filters you define as input and what do you need as an useful output.

Today in particular was searching and trying to implement the transmission curves for Johnson-Cousins and Gunn systems ... but how to correctly define it on kcorrect?? Gotta write an e-mail to Blanton tomorrow.

Messing with kcorrect yet

Not a productive day ... too tired and I don't know why ... sleep early!

Messing with the kcorrect and the filter sets ...

Messing with kcorrect

Messing with understanding with kcorrect really does and which are the filters I really need.

K-Correction

Day "playing" with k-correction and checking differences between kcorrect from Blanton et al and from the Kinney tables.

Figuring out how those things really work!

Pipeline re-run

Productive day despite being a monday IN carnival (at least back home)! The weekend was quite "carnivalistic" with masked ball and "feijoada"!

Re-run the complete pipeline, the last results on k-correction will be "waiting" for me tomorrow morning! Great 1.5 weeks of work in one single day! I LOVE PIPELINES!! hehehehehehe

So, tomorrow comparissons with the k-correction results!

New calibration

New calibration made. The values at the ESO webpage are really "not totally right". Gotta check it very carefully to see if there's some magic there ... anyway, a bunch o time thrown away.

Monday, correct all the magnitudes (it's faster to re-run the photometry pipeline ...).

ESO webpage ... BLAH

So!! The whole day checking for possible sources of error that would cause the mag difference ... nothing.

A the end, desperate measure, a rough calibration using the stars they send you in a table gives a zero point difference ... exactly the difference I'm getting between FORS and ACS photometry ...

The question is ... why ESO has wrong zero points in their webpage??? WHY???

Tomorrow I'll come back to that and do that "properly".

Blah

Blah, no better word ... trying to figure out the magnitude difference ... not there yet ...

Finally

Day partially spent with personal things downtown.

kcorrect instaled and runned fine! Thanks to the very nice script that Miguel wrote for that!! THANKS MIGGY!

So, also compared the FORS results with our HST results and there's a difference ... zero points are suppose to be OK. Gotta figure something out tomorrow ...

... getting there.

Missing objects found (after some photometric "magic" :-)) ) and included in the total sample. Photometry "organized" , colors calculated, galactic extinction correction applied to the photometry. Redshifts for each of the object included in the sample and table ready to be used in kcorrect.

Procedures properly documented and tomorrow instalation and running of kcorrect.

Shocked with the terrible accident that happend in Tenerife with some people from IAC (one of the three deceased I knew from one of my visits to the institute).

Lost objects!

Checked the segmentation images for the parts of each of the object, to be sure they are exactly what they should be.

And forcing the detection of the lost objects, which are relatively close to a pair of bright sources, that's why they were not detected. Still on that ...

One more day on objects

Frustrating doctor appointment!

It was an allergie test to try to see something on my allergie to citrus ... did the test ... no reaction. Asked "not even the citrus one??". Answer "we don't check this, we check some trees that have the same potential ...". My thoughts "Thanks for waisting my morning!!".

I wanted to know specifically if I was allergic to citric acid, or to ascorbic acid, or to some other component of citrus fruits and now I know I'm not allergic to HAMSTER HAIR!! GRRRRRRRR

Back to work! Objects located in the FORS image, separated in to groups (first and second run), ID sys stablished, lists merged, photometry identified to all but one slit with three objects (no detection in FORS images).

TOMORROW K-Correction ... FINALLY!! :-))))))

Today also some time spent with a friend that needed help to understand some points to the Extragalactic Astrophysics exam he has tomorrow ... with my beloved boss hehehehe is good to help people revising to exams, because you revise lots of concepts yourself!!

Finding old objects

Search for the complete sample of the first spectroscopic run.

Found coordinates using an old FIMS plot, but multiple objects inthe same slit complicate the things a bit. Made a bit of magic and adapted the old FIMS table to a new version (actually there's no difference at all ... just the way to organize the reference stars).

Basically now I have all the objects (more than were actually observed, but I'll let the people dealing with the spectroscopy decide which of them was really observed).

Tomorrow K-correction, finally. But I have a doctor appointment in the morning.

Late post from tuesday :-)

Tuesday ... like a monday!

3 bands photometry for the FORS images done and matched.

The ID sys will be modified to better fit the 2 runs of the project. But for that gotta have all the objects in the first run ... what means some archeology. Digging some old "chart" for an old FIMS file that doesn't work anymore (old version) and identifying objects one by one. Problem, to really be sure of which is which objects.

Miguel showed me how to work with kcorrect. Now, gotta install it on my machine.

Monday ...

Monday!

Morning: arranging zero points and a talk from our friend Polis Papaderos about Gravitational Lenses (in German) for his "Habilitazion". He succeeded! :-)

Afternoon: solving problems referent to personal documents I had to send home and some I have to ask the embassy ... that will go on a bit more tomorrow, but not much. Also the first catalogues with the final zero points where done. Also got sick of having 5 different possible IDs to my new objects (referente to the previous works of the group, different observational runs and ways of organizing) so I started a unique ID sys, joining all the objects of all the stages of this project!

Today I got back to my training, on a harder way after the strong cold I had! Great, I needed that!

About magnitudes

The day was about magnitudes!

Gotta fix a couple of small effects, but up to now no major problem ... let's see.

Catalogues should be re-done!

Btw, aprooved the German course with a 9.1 over 10

K-Correction ... finding my way!

So, day on K-Correction.

Managed to reproduce and understand the previous results.

One of the magnitude diference is probably due to the filter, but I'm checking for know previous photometry. The other magnitude difference I'm still waiting for the comparison to look for the cause.

Now gotta learn how to use kcorrect from Blanton et al and compare it with Kinney results ... let's see (the previous work on this from the group were done with Kinney tables, so things must be comparable).
