End of week post ...

OK, that's not right, but I sort of only noticed that now 'cos days have been kind of crazy.

A great part of the time was used to have all the documents necessary to register Matheus when he's born. That meant a series of visits to several administrative departments, but now it's all settled.

Also finished reading what I wanted to read for the paper. Now doing some stuff on the paper material to have the science finished. That may take a bit longer if I decide to expand one of the analysis ... let's see if it makes sense.

Today some discussion with Miguel on the application of GALAPAGOS on his data to have the parameter he needs, he'll think about if that's the best option. Also started teaching galaxy surface photometry to a student ... that will go on Monday if Matheus is not born yet!

And I also managed to install GV on the MAC using FINK, which is not "plain & easy" to install on LEOPARD ...

Calm reading day

A calm reading day, after a not so calm weekend. The reading is likely to go on at home after "home cleaning" :-))

Also tried again to install GV on my Mac with Leopard, some progress but no installation and the progress just makes me feel angrier! It tries to fetch it from an FTP, it is there, but it doesn't do. Then it tries 3 different places at svn.macports.org and it can't find it, BECAUSE IT IS NOT THERE!

Got it by hand, applied a patch that is posted in a ticket about this problem, configures macports to install from my local disc and it complains about a library that is missing. When you try to install the lib, it says it's already there! Even if you uninstall and reinstall the lib it keeps complaining that the lib is missing. For a matter of consistency it should know where the d*** lib is if it installed itself!

As a friend just said: "for apple, consistency is not a synonym of cute, so it can't exist". I'm starting to agree with him (of course even Safari collapsed while I was writing this post, not to mention X11 that collapses on a daily basis).

About patching the local files and configuring macports to read it. Internet information seems to be divided in two types today:

- Info from/for experts that know how to do things already
- Info FROM people that think they know something and is totally useless

For the patch, the ticket (fashion word of the moment) gives a patch, but no one tells you how to apply it. Or in the case of macports, the local configuration doesn't work with the global one ...

whatever ...

DO NOT INSTALL LEOPARD!!

TGI Friday!

So! Report finished and sent.

Day redoing some ELLIPSE analysis and trying to install GV on my mac (with Leopard). Good piece of advice ... if you are a mac user, has Tiger on it and it's not missing anything DO NOT UPGRADE!!!

LEOPARD SUX!!! It will be good, the day apple finishes it and decides to make X11 works properly!!!

UFF Summary ...

OK! No posts the last days because they would be boring ... they would say, doing GALFIT modeling, doing GALFIT modeling ... boring to say ... boring to do also hehehehehe

That finished yesterday and the report to the DLR finished today (eventually tomorrow morning some last corrections) and it goes to the post :-)

Now back to my paper!

BTW, SDSS data is more complicated to deal with. I naively thought that SQL would be "standard" as a format, nooooop. If the DB is written for MSSQL is not readable by mySQL and so on ... it requires converting and also configuring mySQL to read things from different disks would be too complicated (according to people that work with it) ... so now I'll try to use MSSQL to search the DB in a windows computer! Let's see what comes out :-)

"Back"

"Back" between quotation marks because I was never gone, was just away from the blog.

First post of the year!

During the Xmas break work kept flowing in a slower pace, but there.

We couldn't travel, since Matheus can come at any moment, so we stayed home, gathered some friends and did a Xmas dinner. For new years we gathered with some friends in town to see the fireworks ... typical :-)

Work:

- SDSS download keeps going, on a slow pace due to some downtime in the files server, to the problems on my computer (that crashes very often) and to the large size of the files. Only 1/6th missing!!!

- The focus was on the GALFIT analysis of our observed galaxies. Getting the outputs from GALAPAGOS things get easier and faster, but still a lot of work. Data is being analyzed and some of it has to be included in the semester report due to Jan, 15th. I gotta rush on that because it's gonna get complicated when Matheus arrive!!!

Happy new year to all!! 2008 full of work, papers and fun (why not)!
