Still selecting ...

Still selecting images ... tomorrow it continues ...

Also did part of the object selection on the OV_WAV new simulations. Computers can't be idle hehehehehe

Finished the backup of the dN/dS CMB simulations. Just waiting for the limiting flux for each band to estimate the number of sources inside our observed region. I've been thinking about the erros estimate. One idea is estimate the numer of sources in 10 other regions on the sky map with equivalent areas to the observed one, in the same flux range, and use this dispersion as error estimate. Can be an option.

Post from yesterday

Yesterday was a crazy day. Too much to do, day past too fast and I had the German exam at night ... I really forgot to post the day yesterday ... so a late post!

The exam was nice, I realized that I don't know how to use "Immer wenn" ... but it's ok, it wasn't a big deal also.

Spent the whole day selecting images and I realized how bad the weather was ... so I'm selecting the good weather ones ... don't know how to make magic, specially with what I'll do with them there's no way I can do magic!! I wouldn't take my chances!!

Basically that! Today the selection continues ... I'll post that later!

Superflat failed ...

Superflat failed, that's the main conclusion of the day!

Finished the superflats, applied to a test image ... guess what? DOESN'T WORK! Don't correct as it should!

A quick check showed that mostly the images from one night aren't compatible with the next night ... how instable the run can be???

On monday I'll check this frame by frame and get to final conclusion on what can be saved ...

On the weekend I'll do something else, probably finish another data analysis that is about to be finished for already a while, let's see what I get from there! hehehehehe

Still selecting images ...

Yesterday a BLOG problem prevented me from posting, so it goes now :-)

Today more image selection ... also figured out other problems on the detector while I was selecting the images ... Yep! I know, it's hard!

Also today we had two students talk in the morning and the institute's colloquium in the afternoon ... all in German ... hummmmmmm Can't say I understood them totally, but at least the main line.

The coloquium was about the new large telescope plans of ESO, it was nice anyway!

Superflat??

Image selection was not perfect. I'll still be trying to select the best set for the superflat, since there're no skyflats ...

In this combining of images I realized fringing is a major issue in R to this instrument ... one more step in between!

Image selection done ...

Finally posting "today's post" today! :-)

Today we had a student talk about Externally Dispersed Interferometers (EDI). The students are supposed to pick a topic and speak about it.

People put a Michaelson interferometer before the spectrograph and can have a great resolution in doppler variation of lines. This way measuring radial velocities get really better. Nice test made with 51 Pegasus, the historical first planet from Mayor and Queloz (1995). A precision of 11.5 m/s with a test instrument while the original measurements from ELODIE had 30 m/s.

When I worked with CORAVEL data in my master thesis we had 300 m/s hehehehehe I love technology!

Also finished the selection of the images that can be used as flats at the LAICA run. Tomorrow I'll see if they really work ...

Too many meetings

Too many meetings for a day!

But anyway! A longer group meeting to re-arrange our backup system and discuss a few issues.

Also some more discussions about calibration with one of our students.

And, of course, some more Laica reduction, but just a bit. Tomorrow I hope I can use the whole day for that and do a lot of reduction (I gotta)!

To end the day a German class ... it is -10 degrees outside and we go anywhere by bike ... hehehehehe

Nothing special!

Nothing special yesterday (another late post hehehehe)

More about photometric calibrations, helped a friend on reading HST spectra and carried on the LAICA reduction.

Getting better

Late post, again :-)

Yesterday I was feeling better and got to work.

Photometry discussion with a student and a meeting to discuss some issues on the institute basically consumed my day.

Let's see today!

Day in bed

Spent the whole day in bed and managed to work a bit (considering the physical conditions hehehehe)

Corrected a mistake on the new simulations for OV_WAV and carried on the reduction of the Laica run.

Bad Cold

Yesterday was a day that doesn't count. Bad cold, just attended to a talk from one of our students and came back home.

Today gonna stay home and try to do something useful and recover from the cold.

Bad day ... got a cold ... blargh

Today was a half day.

Got a cold. I'm feeling terrible, so couldn't work in the morning and the afternoon was not really productive.

Long group meeting were one of the students presented the status of her work. I liked it, the meeting and the work. We managed to discuss several points of the project.

After that checked the analysis of the simulated images and didn't like what I is there. Gotta figure out what can be wrong.

Also, completing the work from the weekend, just started the analysis of the new set of simulations for the software paper. This will be nice.

I'm feeling so bad and it's so cold outside that I'm not going to the german class today ... no way!

Late post from yesterday!

Late post from yesterday!

Calm data reduction + windows instalation + galaxy profiles discussion + photometry teaching! :-)

YAD (yet another day ...)

Half of the day was spent on the street taking care of home affairs.

Computer issues (like helping Bodo with his laptop to re-install his windows) were also part of my day.

Revised the photometric calibration of an observational run with one of our Ph.D. students.

Some data reduction on the LAICA run.

But at least managed to relax during the night using for the first time my climbing shoes :-))

Whole day on a hurry?!?!?!?!

Not much today.

Checking the cut flatfields of the laica run ... no really good or impressive change up to now.

Reviewing a project Bodo is sending to some agency, gonna finish before going to sleep.

And German class (does it counts? Is a nice thing!)

Short day!

Today was a short day for many reasons!

Script to cut the images has worked, now treat each part as a single image. Still have to figure out how to put them all together with the right levels.

The analysis I left yesterday is still running, but I didn't like the intermediary results. Gotta think what can be wrong.

Most of the time was spent preparing finding charts for on service mode observation ... we should be careful with that!

Since yesterday I joined the German course, today I gotta study a bit (that will happen now).

Monday!

Today the day was full of small things, not really impressive but some.

Prepared some images for modeling, they were suppose to run, BUT, my computer at the institute, every time I try to run a modeling it craches with a "segmentation fault". Don't know why! It's not the IDL instalation and not the code (since it runs, and always have, on other machines), I ran some tests on memory and CPU, nothing wrong was found and no one has a clue about it. Now I've just put it on other computer, let's see if tomorrow it'll be ready.

Some scripting to cut the LAICA images. 4-port readout ... I've been trying to get read of the gain diferences ... no way, and for diffuse light they are just terrible. Talked with Aguerri at Tenerife and he told me he tried a lot and couldn't do it. So, the option is cutting each quadrant and work separatelly. Problem is, I need the whole image and I can't subtract the sky ... he he he yes! I doomed!! As always!!

Most of the time today was spent on arranging my live backup at Bodo's machine, I was using too much space and it was outdated already. Backup is important.

Besides that, yesterday I managed to cycle despite the cold, and created a new blog about cycling, sports and fun activities! Bikes and Coffee (as it should be).

Basically that!! Btw, brought more coffee from home hehehehehe

Back again!!

I'm back from Brazil! Actually I'm back since 31/12 but this whole week I was dealing with the paperwork for the new contract and trying to put somethings back on track!

Today I started playing with some simulated generated images, backup of some data and some upgrades for a paper!

In Brazil I had discussions about projects on simulations, new catalogues of Compact Groups, our CMB paper ... and new perspectives on that!

Finishing the "I'm back" post, today is my birthday, so I'm gonna have a beer later!! hehehehehe

Happy new year for us all!!
